SOLAR HOT WATER REBATES 2018
As we have come into 2018, rebates have increased, making solar hot water much more affordable then previous years. Complete Gas & Hot Water has partnered with AGL Trades Services SA to provide huge rebates worth up to $2,400 for existing homes, with no natural gas connected to make the switch to an electric boosted solar.
To ensure you get the most energy efficient electric boosted solar option possible (if not already installed), you will also need to get a controlledload (off peak) meter to ensure the system only heats overnight on the cheaper tariff (approx. 15-20c per kWh) if no solar is generated during the day. Most houses with a standard electric storage hot water will already have this installed. During the day (approximately 8 months of the year) the panels will heat the water and circulate it back into the tank and if not enough solar is generated due to cloud cover, the electricity meter will then kick in overnight to heat the rest of the tank.
When comparing solar VS gas, it's important to not only factor the total cost for usage, product cost & install - you need to factor in the additional for supply charge. Similar to your electricity, you do get charged a quarterly supply charge of around $70-$80 for having a gas meter at the property, not including the actual usage of gas. If you are not thinking of having additional gas appliances to make this fee worthwhile (and although I am a BIG advocate for natural gas and it's benefits), it may just not be worth switching and is sometimes not a viable option. Sticking to an electric boosted solar will save this supply charge cost, especially if you are currently using less then this on hot water already. You can check your electricity bill for your current hot water usage if you have a standard electric hot water system – you will find this listed under a separate meter called “Controlled Load” which is your off peak meter. This is usage only for the current electric hot water system and/or underfloor heating & pool pumps.
Below you will find two SA government websites that shows how each hot water system operates and a look at approximate usage costs;
